WeChat Guide

Set up and navigate WeChat — China's essential super-app for messaging, payments, and daily life.

WeChat isn't just a messaging app — it's China's digital Swiss Army knife, used by over 1.3 billion peopleevery month. For medical tourists, it's essential for communicating with hospitals, paying bills, booking appointments through mini programs, and navigating daily life.

This guide walks you through everything from downloading the app to using it for your medical trip — including WeChat Pay setup, essential features, and hospital-specific use cases.

Why WeChat?

WeChat (微信, Wēixìn) is China's super-app — messaging, payments, social media, mini programs, and more, all in one application. In China, it's not a question of whether people use WeChat — it's a question of what they don't use it for. Hospitals, restaurants, taxis, and even government services all run through WeChat.

Download and set up WeChat before you travel— it's the single most useful app for your medical trip to China. You'll use it every day for communication, payments, and navigating hospitals.

Download & Setup

Download the App

  • iOS: Search "WeChat" in the App Store
  • Android: Search "WeChat" in Google Play
  • Desktop: Download from wechat.com (optional — mobile is primary)

Create Your Account

  1. 1

    Download the app

Get WeChat from the App Store (iOS), Google Play (Android), or wechat.com (desktop).

  2. 2

    Tap "Sign Up with Mobile"

Choose "Sign up via Mobile" — this is the recommended method. Do not use Facebook sign-up.

  3. 3

    Enter your details

Fill in your name, select your region, enter your phone number, and set a password.

  4. 4

    Complete CAPTCHA verification

Drag the puzzle piece into position to prove you're not a robot.

  5. 5

    Complete friend verification

An existing WeChat user must scan a QR code on your screen to verify your account. This is required for new registrations.

Sign up with your mobile number, NOT Facebook: Mobile sign-up is simpler and more reliable. You'll need a phone number for verification anyway, and Facebook-linked accounts can have issues with WeChat Pay activation. One WeChat account per phone number.

Account Verification

New WeChat accounts require a two-part verification process. This is WeChat's way of preventing spam and fake accounts.

Part 1: CAPTCHA Verification

A simple drag-and-drop puzzle — slide the puzzle piece into the correct position. This step is straightforward and takes a few seconds.

Part 2: Friend Verification

This is the tricky part. You need an existing WeChat user to scan a QR code on your screen to verify your identity. The verifying friend must meet all of these conditions:

  • Their WeChat account was registered at least 1 month ago (6 months if registered in Chinese Mainland)
  • They haven't helped verify another account recently
  • Their account is not blocked or restricted
  • They have WeChat Pay enabled (required if they are a Chinese Mainland user)

If you don't know anyone with WeChat:Contact your hospital's international department — they can help verify your account. Hotel concierges at international hotels may also be able to assist.

Friend verification can be the hardest part: Arrange this before you travel if possible. Ask a friend, colleague, or your hospital coordinator to help with verification. Don't wait until you arrive in China — the verification process is much easier to handle in advance.

Troubleshooting

Can't receive SMS verification code

Try enabling Wi-Fi calling, use a different phone number, or wait a few minutes and request a new code. Some international carriers have delays with Chinese SMS.

Account blocked or restricted

Contact WeChat customer support at 95017 (mainland China) or +86 571 95017 (international). You can also submit an appeal through Me → Settings → Account & Security → WeChat Security Center.

WeChat Pay not appearing in the app

Update the app to the latest version. Try the alternative activation path: Me → Settings → General → Tools → Weixin Pay → Enable. If it still doesn't appear, your region may require additional verification.

Payment declined

Check that you haven't exceeded the transaction limits (¥6,000/tx, ¥50,000/month, ¥60,000/year). Ensure your card is linked correctly and has sufficient funds. Contact your bank to confirm they haven't blocked the transaction.

Can't find a friend for verification

Ask your hospital's international department coordinator — they help with this regularly. Hotel concierges at international hotels can also often assist. As a last resort, try the WeChat support hotline.
